What is an Em Dash?

Em dash

This is similar to a hyphen, but wider and is used differently in text. It’s name comes from the fact that it should generally be the width of a capital M. They are often used in place of parenthesis or quotation marks to show a quote. They may also be used to a shift in thought or a break in tone.

Most word processing programs and keyboards do not have an em dash button. They can be added to a document by using the following keystroke:

  • For PC/Linux - Ctrl+Alt+Minus(-)

  • For Mac - Shift+Option+Minus(-)
