What is an En Dash?

En dash

This is similar to a hyphen, but wider and is used differently in text. It’s name comes from the fact that it should generally be the width of a capital N. It is mostly used to separate ranges between two sets of numbers. Newer software will automatically change hyphens to en dashes when it senses it’s proper use.

Most word processing programs and keyboards do not have an en dash button. They can be added to a document by using the following keystroke:

  • For PC/Linux - Ctrl+Minus(-)

  • For Mac - Option+Minus(-)
